![]() She’s a cartographer in the First Army of the kingdom of Ravka who discovers she has magical powers Alina is actually a Grisha, one of the residents of Ravka who can practice magic. My love affair with this Netflix series and the Grishaverse mostly has to do with the fact that the heroine, Alina Starkov ( Jessie Mei Li), is someone you immediately want to champion. Shadow and Bonechanged all of that for me. ![]() This is not meant as shade to any fantasy stans reading this-I really respect you! I've just…never felt like one of you. ![]() I usually find the worlds too packed with details I can’t follow, the names too long and confusing, and the fan bases so intense they’re intimidating. Let’s make one thing clear: I don’t love fantasy. Mild spoilers for Shadow and Bone season 1 below. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mel is hilarious and smart but also isn't necessarily always in the right, which I appreciated. The best way to describe this book in a sentence would probably be "What if Bella Swan actually had a human friend who cared about her enough to notice all the weirdness going on?" The book is from the point of view of a girl, Mel, whose friend Cathy ends up falling in love with a vampire - which is completely unacceptable in Mel's eyes. Just the idea of this book was enough to get me excited: it's an affectionate parody of not only Twilight, but the general paranormal romance YA craze that's been dominating the market the last few years. I've been a fan of Justine Larbalestier's ever since her last book, Liar, and neither she nor her wonderful cowriter Sarah Rees Brennan disappointed me. ![]() ![]() ![]() The two stories Krauss weaves together are occasionally convoluted and hard to follow. This is also a story you must follow closely while reading. ![]() This is an emotionally rich book, reminding readers how fragile life can be. As Krauss weaves this wonderful tale, the voices of both Leo and Alma penetrate your heart as you feel their loneliness and desperation. In an attempt to heal her mother's grief, Alma is determined to find the book's author. "The History of Love" was given to Alma's mother as a gift from her husband. The second narrator is Alma, a14 year-old girl named after a character in the book. As he struggles to find meaning in his life he becomes suspicious of who may be the author of this book, it sounds very familiar to a book he wrote long ago. Leo lost the love of his life and his son to another man as a result of the war. The first is Leo Gusksy, an elderly Holocaust survivor living a sad lonely life in NYC. Centered upon a book called "The History of Love," the novel follows the two narrators and their relationship with the book. PBR Book Review:The History of Love by Nicole Krauss is a beautiful mystery about love and loss. ![]() ![]() ![]() Along with his writing and teaching Boyd frequently moderates panels on African American issues and current events.
